Canon whetted appetites when they made an EF-S 17-55mm F2.8 with 3 stops of IS. There's an AF toggling button on the back, which is cool. It is a possibility the sensor could overheat though, but it has a warning system built in. There is a new 16-35mm announced with this (EF 16-35 mm f/2.8 L II USM), but it's not IS, I don't think such a short range really benefits from IS that much, plus it would bulk the lens up unnecessarily. I think most people with this system would be using EF lenses..EF-S might give some light drop-off or vignetting.
