These have been around for decades! My first SLR was a Zenith 1980 Moscow Olympics special edition, totally manual with external selenium light meter.
Fantastically heavy solid brass body, with matte black paint, and the olympic logo on the prism. I only had the 50mm, and a 135mm for it, and always wanted the “sniper” kit. But I took a lot of shots with it and it was a great manual camera to learn on.
Unfortunately, nowadays, carrying one of these, especially in the US or the UK might be a risky business!! Shoot on sight might have two meanings! ;)

Grant S.: Yah cool stuff though! Shame you sold the Zenith, probably worth quite a bit now.

Never sold it, still sitting in an aluminum briefcase with the 135 lens, filters, and old Sunpak flash unit at my parents house in the US. The shutter needs repair, but it is still in decent condition. I stopped using it when I got one of the very first Nikon zoom compacts, which I also still have.
Next time I visit the US I’ll bring it back, have it repaired and maybe see what it’ll fetch… ;)

I love photographing, but never own a SLR, just a compact camera and handphone terrible quality camera. The snipper-like camera really cool! Hope can get one when I got my salary 3 and half years later after I graduated.

hallo. I have canon 40D and also the old zenit photosniper so I was curious how does it work together.
1. of course you are able to shoot only in AV mode or manual
2. manual focusing only
3. adapter from m42 to canon cant work, but there is already an adapter on the 300/f4,5 objective which can be replaced with custom made adapter for I think any digital slr.
4. it has a slight color aberation I would say about 1-1,5 pix on 10MGpix camera
5. image sharpness compared to sigma 70-200/f2,8 is much better because of the biger magnification I suppose
6. I will make longer “rifle butt”, but it is already steadier to hold than the camera with sigma 70-200 mounted
7. I also sugest to fit a wire release on the “sniper” triger (much steadier while shooting)
8. for me it is a nice replacement for monopod or tripod, because I can make few stops without them for hicking. for example with zenit tair 3s (300/f4,5)I managed to shoot 3 out of 5 shoots with much better quality on f8 and 1/60s than with sigma 70-200 at f4 and 1/125s (handhold)

sorry for my english. its not my mother language, nor do I live in english speaking country.

I have a c-12, zenit 833563 The snipper-like. it’s in a hard aluminum carrying case w/ everything inside, even w/ 2 rolls. Only missing the camera. I’ve had this since 2000 and i want to learn more. Any info?
thank you
