[...] Looks good to me, that’s for sure! It might be a good choice over the Canon Powershot A710 IS as this camera has similar features and manual controls but is much more compact and has a little bit of extra zoom. [...]

hm.. well, I have no idea about the code name of the error of design flaw hehe. Just something I read about A700, which has zoom lens easily attracting grit. Just wonder if this issue persists in A710 :)

The E18 is old news; I got that once on my A520, but I just took out the batteries, popped them back in, and it automatically pulled the lens back in. Same goes for a Nikon Coolpix 4400 that had the same problem. I think digicams circa 2005 don't have that problem anymore.

Albert: Yah that's a decent metric. Yah I saw Canon has announced a few new models with Digic III but they are all Ixus so far I think. Should get more details at Photokina. I guess this one came into production before the Digic III was ready. Canon still hasn't had anything near the quality of the Sony R1 yet, they seem so be playing safe with Superzoom and the G series died off as it could be killing 300D sales in that time.

Tien Soon: Do you mean the dreaded E18 error where the zoom can't fold up correctly back into the camera? I had that before on my A70 and had to have the lens replaced..The E18 issue did put me off the A700 aswell, I've had no news about design changes on the A710 though so I will be checking it out as it's been a long standing design flaw with the A-series.

I've read a number of complaints about Canon A700 on its bad zoom seals, and zoom lens easily attracting grit. Do you have any idea if this issue is resolved in A710 IS?

I think in general, a camera has good noise if you can work with one stop lower than its maximum ISO. ISO200 on my A520 can be comfortably worked with, and same holds true on the ISO400 shots on the A700 and S3IS I've seen.

DiGiC III should be interesting too, with its 1024x768 at 15fps video and ISO1600. I'd expect a workable ISO800 out of Canon. Sadly, the G7 has a darker F2.8-4.8 compared to the G6's F2.0-3.0, and the only other cameras with DiGiC III announced are Ixuses!

If they had DiGiC III on a manual zoom ultrazoom with hotshoe, they'd kill their budget SLR sales. They seem to have dropped out of that market since the Pro1. But then they don't have anything cheaper than a 350D, so why not?
