Ah lovely fast CF cards!

SanDisk Extreme IV

Now might be a good time to pick up some Extreme III cards.

SanDisk Corporation today introduced the new SanDisk Extreme IV line of CompactFlash digital film cards for professional photographers. The line is targeted at photographers who require the highest possible performance and the largest capacities for their medium format and high-end digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. The SanDisk Extreme IV cards are available in capacities of up to 8-gigabytes (GB) and deliver minimum read and write speeds of 40 megabytes per second (MB/sec.) making these the fastest flash memory cards in the world. This exceptionally fast card speed is critical when shooting large numbers of high-resolution images.

SanDisk also introduced the new SanDisk Extreme FireWire reader that can transfer images from the SanDisk Extreme IV cards to a computer at up to 40MB/sec. for significantly improved workflow efficiency. These new products were announced at a press conference held today at the NASDAQ Market Site in New York City.

The SanDisk Extreme IV cards are targeted at the professional photographer who needs the absolute highest performance and maximum reliability. The company will continue to offer the SanDisk Extreme III and SanDisk Ultraâ II lines.

Can I ask a question about CF cards? I’m not a pro. I’m using a Canon A95. I’m currently using a 3-year-old-128-MB Sandisk card from my previous A70.

I’m thinking of getting a 512MB or 1GB CF card. My question is: will using a 66x card make any difference in terms of shot-to-shot interval?

Unless your cam can write that fast…using this card on a slow cam is a waste of speed :P

Bernard: Any speed card will be fine for your camera, it doesn’t really make much difference on compact cams as the continious mode isn’t that fast anyway due to small buffers and long image processing time. You can go for 50x or 66x it should be fine, for SLR cameras it’s recommended to use 150x or 166x.

Galvin: Rememeber read time is important too when copying 2gb of files to your PC haha

Bili: Photography of course! But we need stuff to take photographs with too.. I’m personally using a Kingston Ultra card and find its write speed is a bit slow when I’m shooting continuous so I was considering upgrading to some Extreme III cards. Kinda expensive though.

Thanks ShaolinTiger, I guess 50x and 66x have become the default or rather, minimum, speed for CF cards.

ST, my past experience taught me not to shoot everything in a 2gb CF. Possibly try to have more 1gb CF cards. Bummer if your 2gb CF gone corrupted.

Remember, shit happens! LOL

Galvin: Yah totally agree, that’s why I’m planning on buying some more 1GB cards, probably Extreme III :) I’ll probably get myself one of those card reader hard drives too for portable storage.
