nice shot.. i personally don't really like using flash for stage shots. i think that a tad of blown-out or shadowy bits sorta adds to the pic sometimes.. but maybe it's also cos i have a crappy flash :(

Yah they were angled badly, unless you put the light behind their head and went for a silouhette.

It's harder with consumer cams as they tend to have very harsh flashes and limited settings (normal, soft, auto) usually. And yeah, last think we want is to invite everyone up to flash in the performers faces. I was careful with the angle, I tried to avoid 'flashing' them directly in the face.

Yeah people taking flash photography in plays is terrible, beeps are worse.

The ultimate sin...not turning off the shutter relase beep on an SLR!

Ahhh... yeah, the rear lights were a bother especially from the front. Had to resort to angling it such that the spotlight was behind the performer's head LOL.

I'd be shy to use flash publicly on a non-pro looking camera as, while it wasn't prohibited (was it? Or an unspoken rule?), flashing would invite all those uncles and aunties coming up and flashing too. :P Such that, during the intermission of a play I went to at KLPAC, they had to stress that flash photography was not allowed. They continued, without flash, but with beeps they didn't know how to mute. :(

I only used fill flash for a couple of shots, when there was strong backlighting and it caused the object to be underexposed. Mostly the sax player from the second set as the rear lights were shining right at me.

It wasn't to illuminate the object so much, more to reduce the number of stops between the foreground and background. <a href="http://www.digisniper.com/2006/07/18/basic-tips-1-flashes-not-just-for-the-dark/" rel="nofollow">An example here</a>.

Will probably post some more tonight.

I was curious as to why you used flash, I thought the lighting was strong enough for a consumer camera at ISO 200. I could even use 1/60 to 1/100! :D Thank goodness for the smoke, it helped to reduce the busy background. I checked back with my pictures, 105mm (3x optical zoom on a point and shoot, or 70mm x 1.5 crop on the D70s) seems to comfortably frame just one performer in action. So you can spit the poison back at the snake. :D
