Under The Light of the Moon

Ah photographing the moon, something we don’t often have chance to do unless we have super telephoto lenses!

The moon was huge and bright last night so I took a few shots of it, sadly the moon itself isn’t clear but the silvery effect of the sky came out very nicely giving a spooky haunted feel to the shot.

It was my first try using my new Manfrotto 190ProDB Tripod with 141RC 3-way Pan/Tilt head.

Shooting the Moon

Exposure: 4 sec Aperture: f/5.6 Focal Length: 60 mm ISO: 320

This was my first time shooting in RAW and processing to TIFF then jpeg for web.

I love taking pics of the sky. It looks great. I tried to take nightshot photos(like yours) with my K750i but couldn’t see the cloud. Only blurish light. :(

Is there any reason to use f5.6 and high ISO since you have a tripod… …(I’m just wondering)

The moon was so big yesterday, it was absolutely beautiful.

Jerry: Yah is hard with phone, try using night mode and lean on something very still, it takes a long time to capture and can be quite grainy.

Khang: ISO320 is still considered low for SLR, my lowest is 200, I had it on 320 from something earlier and forgot to change it back. I can take up to ISO800+ and still not noticeable noise in print though, will post some tests later when I have time and side by side with my Powershot. Larger aperture is needed to give wider depth of focus. The moon was huge, wish I had a 200mm lens to capture the detail a bit :) I wasn’t handheld so I could use as small aperture as I like for different effects, when handheld you need aperture wide open to get as much light as possible and crank up ISO to reduce handshake effect.
